March Birthstone - The Allure of Aquamarine

As shown in our springtime jewels post last week, March brings with it the first blooms of the new season. But it’s also a month dedicated to one of nature’s most alluring gemstones: aquamarine.

Part of the beryl family of gemstones, aquamarine is typically vibrant blue or sea green with a name that denotes its cool, watery hue. Not only is it the birthstone for March, it’s also the gemstone given for 19th wedding anniversaries.

A hardwearing gemstone, aquamarine can be polished into cabochons — smooth, often round gems — or faceted into elegant emerald cuts and pear shapes.

This beautiful gemstone is mined all over the world, from Brazil and Kenya to Nigeria, Madagascar, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Russia. At its highest point, aquamarine can be found at 15,000 feet in Pakistan’s Karakoram Mountains.

At AENEA, we adore aquamarine for its vitality, working with brighter, sky blue hues. Inspired by its azure beauty, our Flow collection sparkles with aquamarine gems, set at opposing angles to evoke twinkling dew drops.

“Aquamarine is a wonderfully refreshing gemstone,” says AENEA founder and creative director Costan Eghiazarian. “We always seek out the finest aqua gemstones for AENEA’s collections — those of stunning clarity that mimic deep pools you simply want to dive into.”

Like many other gemstones, myths and legends are associated with aquamarine. It is rumoured to have calmed waves and kept sailors safe at sea. Aquamarine is also fabled to endow the wearer with foresight, courage, and happiness — making it the perfect fit for our Sarpa earrings, which themselves feature a sweeping serpent design, an emblem of safety and guardianship.

With its alluring hue, aquamarine jewellery brings a cool touch to the wrist, neck and ear. If you’d like to discuss a bespoke aquamarine design, whether as a birthstone to simply to celebrate its beauty, contact AENEA’s Atelier.
